TWIB NOTES
MAY 24th - PANTHERS LOSE HEART BREAKER TO END SEASON
UTHS lose 1-0 in 8 innings to Pekin at the Quincy Regional. Despite Garrett Yount's dominating pitching performance the 2008 baseball season has come to a close. The Panthers played great defense and had awesome pitching, but could not get the timely hit. Yount held Pekin to 4 hits while striking out 8 batters and walking 0. UT could only muster up 4 hits but managed to have runners in scoring postition 4 times. This ends the UTHS careers for 8 very solid young men: Evan Allmendinger, Trevor DeJaynes, Adam Becht, Julio Riojas, Adam Thomas, Chase Vickerman, Ryan Webb and Garrett Yount.
May 19th - Panthers split with Assumption High School to close out regular season.
UT won game 1 7-6 in 8 innings. Adam Thomas earned the win. Game 2 saw the Panthers go down 4-2 in 6 innings. Jim Granack threw lights out, but recieved the loss for UT. Game 1 saw the Panthers rally for 5 runs in the 7th to take the lead and eventually win it in 8 innings.
UT closes out the season 17-16.
UT sophs lose to end season at 7-20.
May 16th - Panthers sweep LaSalle Peru (10-1 and 16-10)
Tonights doubleheader vs. LaSalle Peru saw the Panthers hit 7 home runs. Game 1 was lead by Garrett Yount on the hill, the senior tossed a 5 hit 1 run game. The lone run came on a 490 foot homerun by the LP right fielder. Game 2 saw Adam Thomas earn his 2nd win of the season on the hill. Adam Becht and Chase Vickerman each hit 2 homeruns today. Trevor DeJaynes, Julio Riojas, and Evan Allmendinger each hit homeruns as well. Evan Allmendinger hit a 3 run homer in game to that gave the Panthers the lead, in the top of the 7th. The sweep today moves the Panthers to 16-15 overall. Next up the Panthers conclude the regular season with a double header vs. Assumption High School at Augustana College, Monday Night.
May 14th - Garrett Yount and Mike Park earn 1st Team All-Conference.
Garrett Yount earned 1st team all Western Big Six as a pitcher. Chip was 3-2 on the mound with a 1.68 era. Mike Park earns 1st team all Western Big Six as an infielder. Mike lead UT in hitting with a .423 batting average. Sean Bealer was selected as an Honorable Mention all Western Big Six as an Utility Player.
May 12th - Panthers Win in 8 innings.
UT Varsity baseball team beat the Dixon Dukes 7-6 in 8innings tonight. Today's game was senior day at UTHS, the game was the last home game for our 8 seniors. UT scored 6 runs in the first inning but could not 'plate' another until the bottom of the 8th. Davian Giles entered the game to pitch in the 6th inning, with men on 1st and 2nd base no outs. Davian got the batter to hit into a TRIPLE PLAY. The scored remained tied until the bottom of the 8th, when Mike Park hit a 2 out single to win the game for the Panthers. Davain Giles picked up the Win on the mound. Adam Becht and Mike Park each had 2 hits for the Panthers. The win moves UT Varsity record to 14-15. Next up the Panthers travel to LaSalle Peru for a double dip on Friday.
UT Sophs lose 10-1 at Dixon to drop record to 7-15.
May 8th - Panthers lose to Moline 4-1.
UT gave up 4 unearned runs in the bottom of the first. The Panthers commited 4 errors in the first inning in their loss to the Maroons. UT pitchers held Moline to 3 hits but UT could not overcome the 4 run first inning. The loss moves UTHS Varisty record to 13-15.
UT Sophs lose 6-2 to fall to 7-15.
Next up the Panthers host Dixon monday night. This will be the last home game for the Panthers and it will be Senior Day.
May 6th - Panthers 1 hit Moline, win 5-2.
Davian Giles threw 4 innings of hitless baseball, allowing only 2 baserunners, and was credited with the 'W.' Adam Thomas tossed the last 3 innings yielding only 1 hit allowing 2 runs. Evan Allmendinger paced the Panthers at the plate with a 3 hits including a rbi triple and a solo homerun. Next up the Panthers travel to Moline Thursday. The win moves UTHS Varsity record to 13-14.
Sophs lose 6-1 to drop record to 7-14.
May 5th - Panthers beat up on the Rockets.
UTHS continued their offensive ways monday night at "Modern Woodman Park,' by beating the Rockridge Rockets 20-7. Jim Granack picked up the win, scattering 6 hits and giving up 6 runs. UT was lead on offensive by Trevor DeJaynes 4-5 with 4 rib's. The Panthers scored 20 runs on 19 hits. Next up UT plays at Moline tommorow night. UTHS Varsity record 12-14 overall.
Sophs win 5-0 over Rockridge and move record to 7-13 overall.
May 3rd - Panthers Sweep Quincy to close out WB 6 play.
The Panthers swept Quincy by scores of 14- 2 and 15 - 3. Game 1 saw Panther ace Chip Yount toss a 3 hit complete game and pile up 10 strikeouts. Game 2 was lead by the arm and bat of Adam Becht (AD). AD threw 6 innings with 11 K's he also was 2-4 from the plate with a 3 run homerun. Trevor DeJaynes connected on his first home run of the season. On the day UT committed 2 errors and complied 18 hits. The Panthers finish Western Big Six play at 6-4 and are 11-14 overall.
Next up the Panthers play Rockridge at 'Modern Woodmen Park."

May 1st - UTHS drops a game to Galesburg 7-6.
The Panthers lost 7-6 at Galesburg tonight. The Streaks jumped out to an early 7-1 lead after 2innings, but the Panthers put their hitting shoes on to close it to 7-6. Todd Dempsey got the loss tonight. Adam Thomas and Davian Giles each threw 3 scorless innings. Alex Fulton was 2-4 on the night with a double and a 3 run home run. The Panthers had 8 hits and committed no errors. The loss moves the Panthers to 9-14 overall. Next up UT travels to Quincy saturday to close out conference play.
Ut sophs lose 7-2 at Galesburg. Sophs record 6-13.
April 28th - Panthers lose non-coference game to Alleman.
UTHS lost 8-2 to the Alleman Pioneers today on a chilly afternoon. Jim Granack suffered the loss on the hill. Julio Riojas had 2 hits for the panthers. UT drops to 9-13 overall.
Sophs lose 4-2 to Alleman to drop record to 6-12.
April 26th - Big Day for UT Varsity Pitchers vs. Rock Island.
UTHS varsity swept Rock Island. Garrett Yount beat Rocky today 3-0 by throwing a 3 hitter. In Game 2 Adam Becht tossed a 4 hitter to beat Rocky 1-0. The Panthers made the routine plays all day in what turned out to be a GREAT day of baseball. Mike Park led all panthers at the plate. Stellar defense and a few timely hits were what both pitchers needed today. The win moves the varsity to 4-4 in WB6 play and 9-12 overall. Next up the Panthers play Alleman at home this Monday.
UTHS sophs get swept by Rocky by scores of 18-1 and 13-2: sophs are 0-6 in WB6 and 6-11 overall.
April 22nd - Freshman beat Rock Island 6-5
The UT freshman sqaud beat Rock Island tonight. The victory moves their record to 1-1.
April 22nd - Julio Riojas committs to Carl Sandburg Junior College.
Three year varsity starter Julio Riojas has signed his letter of intent to continue his baseball and academic career at Sandburg College, Galesburg, Il. Julio is the 3rd Panther to committ to play college baseball next season.
April 21st - Panthers cant make routine play; lose 4-3 at Sterling.
The panthers lost 4-3 at Sterling tonight. The panthers tied the game up at 3-3 in the top of the 4th. Sterling plated a run in the bottom of the 7th on a 2 out throwing error. Adam Thomas was credited with the loss. Davian Giles started the game and threw 4 strong innings giving up 3 unearned runs. Both Giles and Thomas threw very well but the panther defense was not up to par. The panthers committed 4 errors to go along with 9 strikeouts. Adam Becht hit his first home run of the year, a 2 run shot to centerfield with 2 outs. Mike Park was 2-2 with an rbi. Next up UT takes on Moline High school, this game will be at 3:30pm at Modern Woodman Park ( home of the Quad City River Bandits.)
The loss tonight moves the varsity record to 7-12 overall
UTHS sophs lost to Sterling tonight 8-2 to drop their record at 6-9 overall.
April 19th - PANTHERS SWEEP THE STREAKS
UT Varsity swept the Galesburg Silver Streaks today, by scores of 11-2 and 6-4. Game 1 saw Garrett Yount throw a stellar 3 hit , 1 run game. Chip game up a solo shot in the bottom of the first inning, but that was all the Streaks could muster up against the lanky righty. Ryan Webb had 3 hits in game one with 2 rbi's. Game 2 saw senior Adam Becht throw 5.3 solid innings, yielding 1 run on 3 hits with 10 K's. Jim Granack came in to throw in the 7th and picked up his first career save. Offensively the panthers were led by Adam Bechts 4-4 outing at the plate. These 2 wins move the panthers record to 7-11 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
Sophmores lose 2 by scores of 2-0 and 4-1 to move there record to 6-8 overall and 0-6 in league play.
April 17th- Panthers Beat Rock Island in Non-Conference tilt.
UT Varsity defeated Rock Island today 7-3. Adam Thomas got the win. Todd Dempsey made his first start since coming of the 15 day DL and threw very well, Jim Granack followed him with 2 solid innings. Davian Giles made his first mound debut throwing 2 scoreless innings. The panthers were led offensively by Mike Parks 2 hit 2 rbi output. This win eliminates the 9 game losing streak and gets the panthers on track going into the home conference doubleheader vs. Galesburg this saturday. Record 5-11 overall.
UT Sophs lose 14-4 to Rock Island. record 6-6 overall.
April 17th- Yount signs with Eckerd College, St. Petersberg Florida.
Garrett Yount has signed his letter of intent to continue his baseball career. Garrett is the Panthers pitching ace. He has been on varsity since his sophomore year. Garrett is excited about the oppurtunity to continue his education and baseball career in sunny Florida. Garrett will major in Marine Biology, and look to make an immediate impact on the baseball team.
April 16th - Split Squad for Freshman and Sophomores
Uths sent their sophomores to Moline to play the back end of the conference doubleheader, the freshman stayed at home to open up their season against Galesburg. The sophomores dropped their game to Moline 11-1, Tyler Holtzman took the loss. The Freshman team lost their season opener to Galesburg 11-0.
Uths Sophs fall to 6-5 overall; 0-4 in WB6. Freshman are 0-1.
April 14th- Panthers Drop twinbill.
Uths was swept tonight vs Moline in the conference doubleheader. The panthers lost game 1 8-0, and game 2 18-4. These losses drop their record to 4-11 overall and 0-4 in WB6 play. Garrett Yount took the lost in game 1 and Adam Becht in game 2. Chase Vickerman had the panthers only 2 its in game one. In game 2 the panthers took the lead 3-1 in the bottom of the 3rd. Moline then scored 16 runs in the top of the 4th.
Sophs lose 7-0 to Moline moving their record to 6-4 overall nd 0-3 in WB6.
Next up the panthers play thursday at home vs Rock Island.
April 10th- Panthers Washed Out
Soggy weather forced the Panthers to move their Varsity and Sophomore game vs. Rock Island to thursday April 17th.
April 5th - Panthers shut out
Uths varsity club opened Western Big Six play by getting swept by the Alleman Pioneers. Game one was a classic old fashion pitching dual. Garrett Yount tossed a 3 hitter, allowing only 2 runs, striking out 5 and walking 2. The panthers could not get the big hit when needed. Offensively the panthers 7 hit effort was not enough.( Chase Vickerman was 3-3 in game 1)
Game 2 started off by the Pioneers scoring 3 runs in bottom of the first. Adam Becht was tagged with the loss after coming out in the 5th inning with the score 3-0. The final score was 10-0. This is the first time in 4 years that the panthers did not score in a Western big six double header. Record 4-9 overall , 0-2 in WB6. ( 7 game losing streak)
Sophs get swept. The UTHS sophs lost game 1 12 -0 and game 2 8-1 moving their record to 6-3 overall and 0-2 in WB6.
April 3rd- Panthers lose
Uths varsity team lost to Rockford Harlem today 7-2. Jim Granack was tagged with the loss, despite givng up only 2 earned runs. The panthers losing streak is now at 5 games.
Sophs rainded out. Saturday the Panthers open WB6 play with a double dip at Alleman High school, game time 11:00am.
March 31st- Panthers washed out
Uths Varsity Squad was rained out today with Normal Community West. No make up date is planned.
March 29th- Panthers blow lead in 7th again
UT was up 5-3 in the top of the 7th, vs. Streator. Garrett Younts best outing of the season turned into a no decision. Adam Thomas picked up his 3rd loss of the season. Julio Riojas was 2-4 with a solo shot and an rbi single. The Panthers host undeafeated Normal West Monday.
Sophs split vs Pekin to move their record to 6-1.
March 28th- Panthers Lose 2 at Streaks Classic
Panthers lost game 1 today 6-5 to the Pekin Dragons. Adam Thomas was tagged with his second loss. Game 2 saw the Panthers get ten run ruled by the Canton Little Giants. The losses today drop the panthers record to 4-5. Next up UT plays Streator.
March 25th- Panthers Lose
UTHS lost 10-5 to Rock Guilford. Starting pitcher Jim Granack threw well, but the panthers commited 6 errors, struck out 9 times and left 14 stranded. The Panthers travel to Galesburg thursday.
UT Sophomores win 11-8 to move their record to 5-0.
March 22nd- Panthers Sweep Bucs
UT swept the Belvedire Bucs today by scores of of 7-2 and 8-5. The Panthers did not make the routine play today but did have some bright spots. Chip Yount pitched a strong 6 innings today in game one, scattering 4 hits striking out 7 walking 2. Todd Dempsey got the win in game 2. Adam Thomas continued in his closer role getting 1 inning of work in each game. Davian Giles led the panthers at the plate.
Sophmores sweep and move their record to 4-0 on the young season.
March 20th- Panthers IMPLODE
UT lost 10-9 to the Geneseo Maple Leafs. The panthers jumped out to an early 8-0 lead, lead by a Ryan Webb home run. Adam Becht was solid through 3 innings, in the 4th the Maple Leafs loaded the bases on 4 walks. Sean Macmillian came into the game in the 4th with the bases juiced. The Leafs pulled within 2, 8-6 after 4innings. Geneseo plated 4 more runs in the 5th to tag MacMillian with the loss. The Panthers squandered a great scoring opurtunity in 6th inning. With runners on 2nd and 3rd and1 out the score 10-9, but could not get the job done. Panthers walked 8 batters and hit 1 to more their season record to 2-2. The next game is Saturday, March 21st at home vs. Belvedire.
Sophomores win 9-7 moving their record to 2-0.
March 19th- Panters Fall to the Pirates
UTHS lost 4-3 at Ottawa tonight. Adam Thomas gave up a run in the bottom of the 7th to give Ottawa the 'W' The Panthers left 15 stranded and struck out 12 times. UT was paced offensively by Sean Bealer who was 3-4. Sopohomore Dylan Merril pitched a solid 4 innings, 3 walks/ 3 hits/ 3 ER/ 4 K's in 4innings of work.
UTHS sophomore team was cancelled due to field conditions.
March 15th- Panthers Sweep Chargers
UTHS panthers swept a doubleheader today beating the Orion Chargers. Game 1 the Panthers won 12-2, Chip Yount picked up the victory on the mound. Game 2 the Panthers won 19-4, Todd Dempsey picked up the win. Next up the Panthers travel to Ottawa on Wed.
UTHS sophomore sqaud picked up a win today in the bottom of the 7th, Shane Newbanks got the 'W'
Feburary 15th- MOVING ON
Adam Becht, Pitcher and infielder, has signed a letter of intent to conitue his baseball career at Lincoln Junior College, Lincoln, IL. Adam has been a varsity performer for the past 2 years.
March 4th- PANTHER BASEBALL PLAYERS
Panther baseball players play a vital role in the 2007-2008 UTHS basketball team. Chip Yount and Adam Becht helped the UTHS basketball team win the Western Big Six conference title and earn the Regional title.
March 6th- "OLD MAN WINTER"
The 2008 Panther Baseball team is anxious to move outdoors. The Panthers have been stuck inside for the first 2 weeks of the season.
March 8th- "HITTING CAMP"
This Saturday the Panthers will be hosting their 3rd annual spring hitting camp.
